Quickly! Take a pen and paper and write down the following instructions that we are going to give you at Enrique Tomás to prepare a delicious Serrano ham salad.

Properties of the Serrano Salad

One of those healthy and especially appetizing recipes is the Serrano ham salad. This is a nutrient-rich dish that combines the fiber of green vegetables with the high protein content of ham.

The more varied the lettuce mix or the more vegetables or nuts you incorporate, the more vitamins and beneficial properties the salad will have.

Are you looking for a refreshing dish that is rich in antioxidants, helps control blood cholesterol and also purifies your body? Then include a salad with ham like the one we propose at Enrique Tomás and enjoy all its benefits.

What better is Jamón Ibérico or Jamón Serrano?

Would you like to turn this dish into an Iberian ham salad? This recipe is ideal with both Serrano ham and Iberian ham, although the choice will depend on the flavour you want to obtain.

The main difference between Iberian and Serrano ham is that both come from different animals. Unlike Serrano ham, Iberian ham is made from Iberian pigs, a darker-skinned breed that has the peculiarity of infiltrating fat into the muscle.

These are fattened in freedom in the dehesa for the last 4 months of their lives, extensive forests with a very particular geography, vegetation and climate that are only found in countries like Spain and Portugal.

Thanks to their diet based on acorns, aromatic herbs, natural grass and daily exercise, it is possible to obtain that unique flavour that characterises a piece of Iberian ham.

On the other hand, Serrano ham comes from white-bred pigs, which do not infiltrate fat and, although its taste and quality is also excellent, it does not have the juiciness, texture or aroma of Iberian hams and ham shoulders.

And sliced or diced (ham cubes) or ham shavings?

ensalada con jamon

This is undoubtedly one of the most frequently asked questions, although the answer will depend, as always, on the taste and texture you want to give your salad.

If you prefer to enjoy a salad with more intensity in the taste and textures of the ham, we suggest you buy sliced ham, besides you will be giving a more gourmet touch to your dish.

However, if you prefer a quick and simple cut, it is better to use Iberian ham in cubes, although this way you will not be able to appreciate the nuances of the ham. Keep in mind that the use of ham cubes is more common in stews, casseroles and sauces, but it all depends on the tastes of the cook and his guests. Also ham shavings, are a good option if you want to mix better the ham within the salad. (see picture below)

For the salad:

  • – 300 g salad mix (rocket, lamb’s lettuce and endive) or romaine lettuce
  • – 200 gr. of Serrano ham or Iberian ham
  • – 160 gr. of manchego cheese
  • – 30 gr. of walnuts
  • – 30 gr. of pine nuts
  • – 80 gr. of sweet corn (optional)
  • – 1 yellow pepper

For the vinaigrette:

  • – ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil
  • – 3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  • – 1 teaspoon of chopped parsley
  • – ½ garlic clove
  • – Black pepper to taste
  • Salt to taste

The ham salad recipe step by step

  1. You will start by washing the salad. Immerse it in a bowl of cold water with a dash of white vinegar.
  2. After a few minutes, drain the leaves with the help of a sieve and cover them with cold water until it is time to use them. This will keep them crisp.
  3. Then toast the pine nuts and walnuts. Line a tray with vegetable paper, spread them out on it and brown them in the oven at 180° for 10 minutes. After this time, take them out and let them rest to cool down.
  4. Wash the pepper well, remove the stalk, veins and seeds, and cut it into small squares.
  5. Now, cut the cured cheese into thin slices and save them for the end.
  6. If you are going to use the ham in cubes, you will not have to cut it, although if you have decided on the sliced ham, you will have to slice it a little.
  7. To make the vinaigrette, peel the clove of garlic and cut it into small dice. Pour the ingredients into the glass of the blender and blend until you get a homogeneous mixture.
  8. Before serving, remember to drain the lettuce until it is very dry. Then, place it in a large bowl and mix it together with the pepper, nuts, corn, vinaigrette. Add the cheese at the end so that it does not break.

And it would be ready to eat by now! We hope you enjoy this Serrano ham salad that we recommend at Enrique Tomás.
