How to eat Manchego cheese

Otros idiomas: Español Français Deutsch Italiano

Spain has a great cheese heritage with more than 26 Denominations of Origin (D.O.). One of the most outstanding and autochthonous types is Manchego cheese, made from Manchego sheep’s milk and linked to the La Mancha Denomination of Origin. It is considered a delicatessen product around the world, as is Jamón Ibérico. At Enrique Tomás we are going to show you what it is, how it is made and how to eat Manchego cheese, so you can enjoy all its flavor like a true gourmet!

What is Manchego cheese?

Manchego cheese is a type of cured cheese that, as its name suggests, is produced in Castilla-La Mancha and comes from the milk of sheep of the Manchego breed.

There are different brands and types of Manchego cheese, there are cheeses with walnuts, or there are even artisan Manchego cheeses… Whatever the case may be, its quality has led to more and more followers every day. In fact, this Iberian cheese has a denomination of origin with a regulatory council responsible for its certification. And the most important thing: it is delicious!

At the World Cheese Awards, the most important cheese contest in the world, every year a Manchego cheese comes out among the top 100. Its excellent flavor is what has made its fame go beyond our borders.

How is it made?

Manchego sheep’s cheese is made with pasteurized milk and needs to mature from a minimum of 30 days to a maximum of 2 years. The milk of this Spanish cheese does not contain any medicinal product and every detail is taken care of during the process of making this product, which is why it is a cheese of exceptional quality.

7 ways to enjoy Manchego cheese

Now that we know what it is and how it is made, let’s talk about how to eat Manchego cheese. In Spanish gastronomy the most typical thing to do is to serve the cheese as part of a shared appetizer either in the form of a plate, cheese board or rather as a tapa. Thanks to its irresistible taste and versatility, there are also countless recipes in which it is delicious to add this type of cheese. Keep reading and you will discover which ones!

Alone

We have already said that eating Manchego cheese alone is the most appropriate way to enjoy 100% of its flavor, whether served on a plate, as a tapa or on a cheese board. As it is a delicatessen product and of good quality, as it happens with Iberian ham or Iberian cured meats, it is worth enjoying it alone, accompanying it with a little bread and olive oil.

To appreciate its full flavor, it is important to know how to cut Manchego cheese. If we do it the right way, we will enjoy more of all its aromas. Prepare a cheese and wine tasting and you will see, all your guests will be delighted! In addition, in Enrique Tomás we also advise you which wines to pair with this delicacy.

Salad

Just as the Italians use mozzarella to create Caprese salad, Manchego cheese is an ideal product to add to salads. A good combination could be the delicious garden tomatoes from southern Spain, sliced and accompanied by manchego, olive oil and oregano, which makes our mouths water just thinking about it!

With Jam

Although it is most common to accompany goat cheese with tomato jam, this does not mean that it is the only one with a flavor suitable for fruit jam. Manchego cheese is equally suitable to accompany it with jam. We recommend raspberry jam, but you can choose the one you prefer. Peach, blueberry, apple… any combination is good!

With pasta or pizza

Grated cheese is usually very common at the end of all kinds of pasta dishes, but stuffed pasta also allows you to integrate this ingredient directly into the preparation. If you are going to prepare your own ravioli, we advise you to fill them with a little manchego cheese. Once you have them ready, cook them and accompany them with a tomato and dried fruit sauce that will intensify their flavor. It will be a great dish!

And on the other hand, one of the best pizzas there is, without a doubt, the four cheese pizza. If you prepare it with a good quality manchego, you will enjoy it even more! We advise you not to buy it prepared, because if you use quality raw materials in the dough, as well as in the rest of the ingredients, it will be irresistible!

In skewers

Manchego cheese skewers are an exquisite choice for canapés, for tapas, for original dinners? If you want to know more about these cheese kushiage, we explain how to make them.

Cheese board, jamón ibérico and cold meats

One of the most typical starters of our gastronomy is the variety of Iberian cold meats, jamón ibérico and cheese, and enjoy these accompanied with bread is undoubtedly a pleasure that will please everyone. In addition, if you add seasonal fruits, typical of each season, as accompaniments, you will get a lighter and delicious lunch or dinner to share.

You can see that Manchego cheese can be eaten in infinite ways, but what is clear is that none of them is better than the rest. In a matter of tastes there is nothing written, so choose the one you like the most, and get your boots on!
