These are difficult times for all of us. The news we hear every day usually depresses us and ends up making a dent in our spirits, no matter how positive we are, and despite being in the middle of the holiday period we so much wanted to get to. It is true that mobility is limited, but our imagination and creativity are not. Give free rein to everything that you always put off because of lack of time or priority. But don’t neglect your diet in spite of the good weather, because now more than ever we have to protect ourselves and strengthen our organism. Good health means having a strong and robust immune system that can cope with any disease. And of course, we achieve this mainly through a healthy and balanced diet. We do not need to deprive ourselves of anything – unless our doctor has prescribed it – if we are careful with the amounts and always looking for the balance. Apply the maxim of “a little bit of a lot” instead of “a lot of a little” and you will not have to give up what you like best.
If this summer, like most, you are not travelling or staying to support local tourism, we understand you very well. Surely you never imagined that in the middle of a holiday or in the middle of August you would feel so low in spirits. Don’t be overwhelmed by what you can’t change and turn the tables on yourself by looking for ways to cheer you up and please you. Remember that phrase we often use but rarely remember to put into practice “enjoying life’s little moments”. Find your moments!
It has been proven that a little exercise a day is one of the most effective methods to raise our mood, because by doing so our body secretes those famous hormones of happiness and pleasure, the so-called endorphins. They give us that sensation of well-being, and even if we end up tired, it increases our vital and especially emotional energy. Of course each person, depending on their tastes, their possibilities will do what they like best or what is most within their reach. It is not the amount or intensity that matters here, since you must mark it while you feel good, instead when you decide what activity is within your reach, be constant. Frequency is important, to maintain a good mood and of course good health.
See what works for you, if you dare to try something new, you have it easy, look for what allows you to vent outdoors: surfing, swimming, windsurfing, kitesurfing, … If your thing is not the water or the sea is far away, then take advantage of the early hours, with less heat, to take long walks through the countryside or mountains or through the city (now they are emptier than usual and you will enjoy them better!), for hiking or biking or motor but for the latter better be willing to extreme experiences. If you don’t feel like moving so much, and you prefer not to go out too much, do some stretching guidelines or get a yoga, pilates or zumba tutorial from the internet and give it a try.
For the mood to be right, we have to follow habits and routines that help us relax and rest well. It is clear that without a well-rested body, any activity, however small, becomes a heavy task, so look for those moments that are pleasant for you: reading a book on a bench on the promenade, sitting under a tree or on the terrace of your house with a refreshing drink to hydrate you well. Maybe do a yoga meditation, listen to your favorite music while walking, or at home. To pamper yourself, get an aromatherapy facial and body treatment at home. Essential oils are a natural source to awaken our most intimate sense, the sense of smell, and take us to the endearing places and moments that our memory holds.
The food deserves a separate chapter. Although it is a hackneyed topic that “we are what we eat”, it is very true and it is necessary to keep it in mind not only for the wellbeing of our body but also of our mind, the latter being perhaps the most important. If our brain is not well, our body certainly will not be either.
And, how lucky we are! If one thing is one of the best in the world in Spain, it is undoubtedly our gastronomy, so rich and varied. Take advantage of the many fresh foods of this summer season to vary your diet while you strengthen yourself by eating and enjoying one of life’s great pleasures.
It is frequent that when we are in a low state of mind we are given for eating and not all the food favors our state of mind, besides this, its abuse can cause problems in our body and affect with it also our mind. However, there is a group of foods that act directly on our state of mind.
One of them is chocolate, which has the advantage of increasing the levels of serotonin in our body. Serotonin not only makes us happy, but also helps to boost performance, improves circulation and is a powerful natural analgesic. The more pure black, the healthier. Just don’t eat the tablet in one go, because you’ll be happy for sure, but watch out for the weight 😉
Bluefish rich in Omega 3 is especially affordable in summer, including: sardine, red mullet, tuna, salmon, trout, bonito, swordfish, turbot, mackerel, anchovy or anchovy, etc. As you can see, it will not be by variety. Its fats have an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect.
Nuts in all their variants are a source of good fats for the body, but especially nuts concentrate in this nutrient within which the omega 3 and omega 6 stand out.
They also offer fibre, protein, calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron and other nutrients that are good for the body, so it is advisable to include them in your regular diet. Therefore, in moderate amounts they are excellent for the mood without affecting our weight.
Fresh fruits like:
Allow us not to miss this rich delicacy so exclusive to our cuisine and that is our reason for being.
Taking up again the serotonin, if something makes it rise is a high level of tryptophan, and if a food is rich in it is the Iberian ham (jamón ibérico) that besides being a delight for our palate and smell, it acts as a stimulator of our nervous system. And we can eat it alone, with a little bread or Sevillian breadsticks, in summer recipes in the form of ham shavings or to liven up the cold soups so typical of this year.
By administering an extra dose of tryptophan in our daily diet, we avoid falling into such situations, as well as fighting migraines and dental pain.
It also helps us to sleep better and consequently to perform more in our daily life in a more relaxed way so that we can get to the pillow already exhausted.
Another virtue of tryptophan is to help us reduce anxiety about food, especially if we are in the process of weight reduction or anxiety attacks.
Not only does it act by reducing fat and strengthening our body, but it also prevents us from falling into the temptation of consuming sweets or carbohydrates that do so much damage to our diets.
In short, the consumption of good ham in moderation, makes us hapoier and remember, it gives pleasure!
